Some General Guidelines on the Costs associated with a Website.

• Domain Name
• Hosting
• Website Construction
• Maintenance
Domain Name:
Figure $10 a year to register a domain name.
Some websites advertise that the Domain name is "Free". There are "No Free Lunches" they just bundled it into another expense.
Hosting comes in two flavors:
1.) Shared Hosting runs from $5 to $10 per month. Probably 70% of today's websites share a Server.
2.) Dedicated Server runs $50 to $1000 per month. These are used mainly by businesses and other large organizations who require security and control over their servers.
Website Construction:
Build Your Own? $100 for software & 50 to 100 hours learning curve or You can get a simple 4 to 6 page website built for you for around $100 to $200.
Maintenance: Do it yourself if you built your website.
Contract out the maintenance is totally dependant on the amount & frequency of changes need on the website. Figure $20 to $30 an hour to hire a webmaster to do your updates.
Ok lets try to do some ball park math.
Be your own Webmaster $60 to $70 a year and $100 in software.
Have someone build you a Simple website and you do the updates. Startup costs of $200 to $400 and $60 to $70 per year.
Contract a Webmaster to Host, Build & Maintain a 'Reasonably Simple' Small Organization or Business website could run anywhere from $500 to $5000 per year depending on the complexity and amount of updating required. (A good programmer get $25 to $45 per hour)
All of the above is predicated on Quality Hosting a Professional Looking website
Over 50% of the websites on the internet today were built to standards that are slowly being phased out. Don't make the mistake employing an inexpensive Webmaster who uses old standards like Front Page or uses Tables instead of CSS.
